“I like to look for things no one else catches. I hate the way drivers never look at the road in old movies.”

(from the movie “Amelie”)

  1. Well, continuing with the theme of oddities in old-movie driving scenes, here are a couple more:

    1. The passenger sits RIGHT NEXT to the driver, almost crowding him or her. If the camera panned back, you’d see a distance of several feet between the passenger and his/her door. It’s especially funny when they’re both men.

    2. No rearview mirror. Since the passenger is sitting so close to the driver, the rearview mirror would be in the way of his/her face. So, they remove it (the mirror, not the face).

    3. Watch how the driver steers down a straight street. He CONSTANTLY saws at the wheel, turning it left and right with large movements — sometimes comically large movements. Try driving like that for a block and see what happens. But, it provides “movement” on the screen, and movies are all about movement.
