My new aquarium and canopy came in at the end of last week, which was definitely good news. Joy went and picked them up for me while I was at work. She had to borrow my mom’s car because it’s quite a bit bigger than either of ours, and then she was still barely able to fit the tank in the back seat. All along we had been planning to put the tank along the far wall in our dining room, but once it got here, we spent a good portion of the weekend trying it out all over the place just to make sure that’s where we really wanted it. Once you fill a tank with water, you really don’t want to have to drain it to move it, so we just wanted to be completely sure we picked the best possible spot. And it looks like we were right all along because in the end, it’s on the far wall in the dining room where we were planning on putting it from the beginning. But at least now we know for sure.
Today was my first day at my new job. Being a larger company than the one I previously worked for, there was quite a bit of HR stuff to do the first day, but once all of that was out of the way, my new boss gave me an overview of the software product I will be working on. Tomorrow I should get to starting poking around on the source code to begin to familiarize myself with how things are organized in more detail. Everyone I met today was very nice and made me feel welcome, which is always comforting when undertaking a big change like this. So I would say the first day was good, and I’m looking forward to heading back tomorrow to learn more.

Since tomorrow is my last day at my old job, they had a lunch for me today at the office. Ron made his delicious lasagna and meatballs, Sherry and Bill brought desserts, and I think Debbie brought salad and garlic bread. I thought the lunch was a really nice thing for them to do. It’s a bittersweet thing leaving the place I have worked for the past eight years. I’m definitely looking forward to the challenges and adventures that await at my new job, but on the other hand I’ve been through a lot with these people. I’m certainly going to miss everyone, but since I will still be here in town, I hope to keep in touch. My new office will be very near an area with a lot of restaurants that are popular for lunch, so hopefully I can meet up with the old folks there on occasion.
“All of my life is His
All of my sins He forgives
All of my days I will live in His love
Great is the Lord God
Greatly to be praised with your whole heart
And great is the Lord God
Love him all your days
Great is the Lord God
Wondrous are His ways with His people
And great is the Lord God
Worthy of our praise”
(from the song “Great Is The Lord God” by Buddy Greene)

Last week Joy and I watched “Nosferatu” (1922). Nosferatu is the very first Dracula film ever made. I thought the movie was very stylishly directed and shot, and it created a great sense of doom and dread. The scene where Hutter’s wife looks out the window at night and sees Nosferatu staring back at her from his window is very unsettling. I imagine the film must have been terrifically frightening when it was released over 80 years ago. I’m not usually a big fan of horror movies, but this film was so well done, it was hard not to like it. Joy wasn’t too crazy about the film because she thought it was scary, but I definitely enjoyed it.
Joy and I went to pick up the stand for the aquarium today. The tank and canopy were also supposed to arrive, but there were some problems with those. The tank was listed as in stock with the distributor, but for some reason they did not send it with the rest of the shipment. The custom order canopy was made incorrectly by the manufacturer, so it had to be reordered for them to make again, hopefully correctly this time. But all that aside, the stand looks great. The customization is exactly what I requested and I’m really happy with it. The local aquarium store talked to the distributor, and the tank is supposed to arrive next week (since it is still listed as in stock), and the canopy will move to the front of the line for the custom shop since they are fixing their mistake, so hopefully that will only take a couple of weeks.
Also, now that I was finally able to measure the actual stand, I discovered that the standard skimmer body will work to replace the broken custom short one, which means I should get the replacement skimmer body next week instead of several months from now. That was really good news.
