Miyazaki Films On TCM

Filed under: Movies — Brad @ 11:10 pm

Nausicaa.net recently announced that Turner Classic Movies will be playing nine Miyazaki movies in January 2006. TCM typically broadcasts in original aspect ratio with no commericals, so this is excellent news.

  • Thursday, January 5: Spirted Away and Princess Mononoke
  • Thursday, January 12: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky
  • Thursday, January 19: My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, and Whisper of the Heart
  • Thursday, January 26: Only Yesterday and Pom Poko

I already have the DVDs for most of these (Spirited Away, Mononoke, Nausicaa, Castle, Porco, and Pom Poko), but the other three will be great to see. I will certainly buy the DVD for Totoro when it comes out next spring, but I believe the TCM broadcast will be before the DVD release, so I can see a little “preview” before the DVD comes out. As far as I am aware, Whisper of the Heart and Only Yesterday are not currently slated for DVD release in the US at all, so this might be my only chance to catch them. I can’t wait for January to get here!

  1. Miyazaki? Don’t they make china place settings or something? I think we have some; I’ll let you look at it next time you’re over!

Never mind. I just looked it up in Wikipedia.

Anime, huh? I HATE anime. Know why? Because the guy who was just about the best blogger EVER (that would be Stephen Den Beste) quit blogging on topical matters and now only writes about anime. So, I figure it’s all anime’s fault that I don’t get to read his amazingly well-informed insights on politics, the WOT, etc.

Okay, enough of that. Which Miyazaki flick do you like best, and why?

And if I wanted to see one (just one) that would best introduce me to his artistry, which one would that be?

  2. My favorite Miyazaki film (no question, instant answer) is Spirited Away. The movie is, quite simply, magical. It’s adventurous, wonderfully entertaining (and funny in many parts), and almost flawlessly paced. It’s almost impossible to overstate how much I love this film. The contest for second place is between Totoro and Howl’s Moving Castle.

Joy and I have actually discussed on several occasions which film we would want you to see if you watched only one. My general recommendation for anyone who asks would be Spirited Away and Joy would say Howl (that’s her favorite), but we’ve been trying to think about which one would be best for you specifically. I’m almost ready to agree with Joy on Howl because it somehow feels a little more “western” and therefore less “foreign”. It comes out on DVD in the spring, so be ready. :-) Incidentally, for mom I think it would be Totoro or Kiki’s Delivery Service.
